The Spanish government has offered to assist the US in setting up a missile-defense system by deploying specially modified frigates to provide early warning for a naval "missile shield."
According to the Spanish daily El Pais, the proposal, floated during a May meeting at the Pentagon between US and Spanish defense officials, envisions employing four of Spain's new F-100 frigates equipped with the Lockheed Martin (Moorestown, NJ) Aegis system, which includes the AN/SPY-ID, a three-dimensional search and fire-control radar with a range of 600 km and a 360-degree field of view.
