Dan Kwapinski grew up in a sea of riotous quiet. Fort Ransom State Park, which his father manages and where his family lives, is 887 acres of hard-core North Dakota heaven. It's a place where a kid and the earth can become whisper-tight buddies; hiking, fishing, canoeing the sweet-running Sheyenne River.
"It's kind of away from everything," Kwapinski said.
For excitement, the town of Fort Ransom (population: 70) is nearby. And for raw, unadulterated fun, it's just 20 miles to the city of Lisbon (2,292) and the local high school. For Kwapinski, Lisbon was "the big metropolis."
