In a move that surprised industry observers and some colleagues, Edwin Russell stepped down Tuesday as president, CEO and chairman of Allete Inc., the Duluth-based parent company of Minnesota Power and a collection of other businesses.
David Gartzke, a 26-year Allete veteran who most recently was chief financial officer, was named to succeed Russell as president of the firm, which in addition to its electric utility also owns a wholesale auto-auction business, auto finance operations, water utilities in Florida and North Carolina and real estate in Florida.
