The cat came back--and this time no one sneezed. Two unusual collaborators, an entrepreneurial emergency medicine resident and a scientist known for animal cloning, envision the development of an allergen-free cat by 2003. Dr. David Avner of Syracuse, N.Y., has founded Transgenic Pets and has contracted Dr. Xiangzhong Yang of the University of Connecticut in Storrs to do the genetic engineering and cloning research. The allergen-free cat would lack the Fel d1 gene, which produces a protein that keeps the cat's skin moist and triggers 60%-90% of allergic reactions.
