Octave Mirbeau (1848-1917) was a misogynist and an anarchist. At first sight these two qualities seem mutually exclusive: anarchism stands for the liberation of all people from any form of authoritarian control; patriarchal constrictions of women's lives and exploitation of their labour are one of the clearest examples of authoritarian values in any society, and have historically formed the basis for many forms of authoritarian politics.
