WASHINGTON _ European regulators formally accused Microsoft Thursday of abusing its monopoly power to thwart competition from rivals in the computer server and digital media player businesses, intensifying the company's legal woes around the globe.
The European Commission, the competition enforcer and executive arm of the European Union, filed the charges against the software giant after a 1{-year investigation into Microsoft's tactics to extend its dominance from PC operating systems into new businesses.
