SAN JOSE, Calif. _ Santa Clara County agricultural officials began exterminating the Guava fruit fly this week after two of the pests were found in Southeast San Jose.
The fly _ usually found in Burma, Thailand, Sri Lanka and India _ attacks citrus plants, peaches and other tropical fruit.
On Wednesday, agricultural officials started using an eradication technique called "male annihilation," which utilizes ground-based applications of insecticide and pheromone to lure the insect. The mixture is applied in small spots on objects such as trees and utility poles, said Greg Van Wassenhove, county agricultural commissioner.
