Greece's passenger vessel sector is in the midst of a radical makeover. A new law will not only open up the country's routes to competition from European Union passenger vessels starting November 1,2002, but also force the retirement of a good chunk of the sector's aging hulks. The law lowers the age ceiling for passenger ships from 85 to 30 years, starting 2008, instead of 2006, bringing it more in line with European Union directives. The push for age limits comes in the wake of last year's deadly sinking of Minoan Flying Dolphins' Express Samina.
