Sep. 1--Backers of a 13-mile rail line from Texas 3 to the Bayport Industrial District filed for regulatory permission for the project.
Some residents living in the Clear Lake area are opposing the rail line, which would run just south of Ellington Field. Residents say they are worried about the potential for derailments of rail cars carrying hazardous materials.
The route also would run near two elementary schools.
Rail line officials have said they support having an environmental impact study done for the project.
