ABIX via COMTEX) -- Virgin Blue's owner, Sir Richard Branson, rejected Air New Zealand's $A250m takeover offer on 4 September 2001. Announcing the rejection, Branson said the sale of Virgin Blue would have "sold out" the Australian public. Instead, Branson promised to invest millions of dollars in expanding Virgin Blue's fleet and routes. Branson said he met with the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission's chairman, Allan Fels, to discuss the prospect of taking some regional routes from Ansett. Queensland's Premier, Peter Beattie, has attacked Qantas and Ansett for price exploitation.
