Voters in Kansas City will cast their ballots next month on a proposal to fund a new light rail system.
An 0.5% percent sales tax increase to raise the local share of a proposed 23.8-mile, $793 million LRT will appear on the Aug. 7 ballot. The city council approved the election measure in May by a 12-1 vote. It would raise approximately $30 million annually over 25 years and would finance capital and operating expenses. Federal grants are expected to cover 60% of construction costs.
