To the Editor:
Frank Wilner and many other Amtrak apologists always use highway/airway "subsidy" as the reason Amtrak is such a financial basket case, While it is true the other modes do get their infrastructure funding from government, mostly from taxes on the users, what is never mentioned is the payback those "subsidies" generate. Highways, airways, and to a lesser extent urban rail transit foster trillions of dollars of commerce annually. The tax dollars collected on this commerce more than offset the cost of building and maintaining highway and airway infrastructure.
