THE SEARCH FOR etiologic factors of alcohol use is a rapidly developing scientific research field. Characteristics of personality may play a central role in the development of alcohol use and abuse (Cloninger, 1987; Zucker and Gomberg, 1986). The research linking personality to alcohol consumption appears to focus on two major dimensions of personality: negative emotionality and behavioral disinhibition (Sher and Trull, 1994).
