IN RECENT YEARS, it has become common to address interpersonal as well as intrapersonal factors in alcoholism treatment programs (Institute of Medicine, 1990; Meyers and Smith, 1995; O'Farrell and Fals-Stewart, 1999), although information on the magnitude of the relationship between interpersonal factors and drinking outcomes is inconsistent. This article provides a conceptually based meta-analytic review and synthesis of some of the findings of past research in order to examine the association (correlation) between alcoholism treatment drinking outcomes and social relationships.
