AS dawn comes up and the black volcanic sand sucks down the solar heat onto the island, you can smell the smoke.
Three thousand metres above us, the volcano spits and puffs, coughing up black plumes which hang above the peak like funereal ostrich feathers.
Stromboli is for strong lovers.
There is an end-of-the-world feeling to it and the sexual symbolism of an erupting volcano needs no further extrapolation.
Even the dark streets, unencumbered by the inconveniences of street lighting, are an open invitation to trysting couples.
