BOTOLAN, Zambales - Disaster control authorities declared the communities around Mt. Pinatubo volcano safe as government engineers slowly drained the crater lake yesterday morning.

Chief Supt. Reynaldo I. Berroya, chairman of the Central Luzon Regional Disaster Coordinating Council (RDCC), said only about 9,000 townsfolk were evacuated to safer places for the draining of the crater lake.

Aetas and workers of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) completed yesterday afternoon the breaching of the crater lake to allow the slow flow of lake water.
