Sep. 2--ALMA-ATA, Kazakhstan--The first major pipeline out of the Caspian Sea region is due to go online this month, fuelling rising political tension in the area about the carve-up of the region's precious oil assets.
The pipeline, controlled by the Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC), which counts leading US oil company Chevron among its investors, will not only bring much-needed cash to the region's former Soviet republics, but also boost Russia's hand in its battle against America to exert influence in the area.
