Let them eat cowpies. Sage grouse hunting season opens Saturday, but it will prove to be a short walk in the fragrant shrubbery.
The few upland hunters and their bird dogs who still celebrate a Colorado pastime as traditional as munching Rocky Mountain oysters can thank a cow or sheep for the collapse of yet another hunting opportunity.
The sage grouse hunting season has shrunk from 30 days to seven over the past decade. It remains seven days long (Sept. 8-14) in 15 northwestern Colorado game units this year. The seven days include only one weekend.
That leaves precious little time for the outing ...
