The Mohawk Valley is currently the sports capital of New York.
Wednesday marked the beginning of the Empire State Games - being held this week in Madison, Oneida, Herkimer and Cortland counties - with opening ceremonies and concert by the popular rock group Collective Soul.
The athletic competition for the 24th Empire State Games, the nation's oldest and largest state athletic competition, starts today. The closing ceremonies will be held Sunday.
Thousands of athletes and spectators are expected to flock to the area to watch events ranging from swimming to judo to bowling to fencing.
