When Claudia Russell won the New Artist of the Year award from WUMB-FM (91.9) last winter, the choice bucked some trends. In a scene packed with budding 20-something singer-songwriters, here was a California singer past 40 whose rich repertoire consisted mainly of other composers' music.
The interpretations on the CD "Song Food" (Radio Rhythm Records) are light of touch and penetrating of mood. Russell's sweet, delightfully unaffected voice fits snugly with the Americana radio format, and she manages the trick without twanging it up.
