DALLAS _ A flock of ancient humans headed north for the ice age, scientists have discovered.
Working in the Russian Arctic, archaeologists have unearthed a handful of stone tools and a chiseled mammoth tusk dating back almost 40,000 years. It is the oldest evidence yet that humans moved so far north so early in their history, the scientists report Thursday in the journal Nature.
While some researchers dispute the date, others called the work a step toward understanding the capabilities of early humans.
