Sep. 7--Cold War workers who got sick at a South Side beryllium plant can't get the $150,000 compensation checks they've been awaiting since last fall.
Brush Wellman Inc. did defense work, but can't show it did the kind that entitles them to money and medical care. Hampered in part by the top-secret nature of nuclear weapons documents, the company says it is still trying.
"This is a big blow to us here," said Mike Matulin, one of 27 current or former workers known to have developed chronic beryllium disease since the Tucson plant opened in 1980.
