Article: Scientists plan carbon dioxide sinks at sea.(trying to reverse global warming)(Brief Article)

Scientists at the Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Centre in Bergen, Norway, have suggested that it may be possible to reverse global warming by sending thousands of tonnes of liquefied carbon dioxide ([CO.sub.2]) to the bottom of the ocean. The gas is soluble in water and its solubility increases with the pressure, cold and lessening salinity associated with depths of nearly a kilometre.

Research leader Dr Helge Drange and his colleagues used computer models to show that if [CO.sub.2] was released in the Norwegian Sea, at a depth of 800m, it would not return to the surface. Instead, it either dissolves or, at higher pressures, forms blobs of gas protected ...
