By the mid-1980s, St. Mary of Sorrows Roman Catholic Church, located in downtown Buffalo, New York, appeared certain to suffer the same fate as many other historic buildings in inner cities across the United States. The immigrant populations (e.g., Polish, German, Irish, Italian) that had for years formed the heart of its congregation had long since moved elsewhere, and the church was slated for demolition.
