Child of the '60s set to become first Black woman in space
AS an astronaut, Dr. Mae Jemison is undergoing one of the most challenging types of on-the-job training imaginable. As the first Black woman astronaut, she's learning what it's like to be a bona fide pioneer.
Since August 1987, the 32-year-old physician has been based at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, preparing for a historic journey into space. Her daily training ins intense and vigorous. She says she has yet to receive a specific flight assignment, "but they may think about flying people out of our group sometime in 1991."
