James Doti, president of Chapman University, last week wound up his presentation at the 2001 Midyear Economic Forecast in downtown L.A. with a rather unusual suggestion -- that the business leaders in attendance might want to drop dead before 2011, and ideally in 2010 to maximize estate-planning benefits.

He then projected the image of a casket onto the screen where econometric graphs and charts had been displayed throughout the event.
