RECENTLY U.S. PRODUCTIVITY HAS ACCELERATED MORE THAN PRODUCTIVITY OF THIRTEEN INDUSTRIALIZED COUNTRIES.
In recent years, the U.S economy has surprised observers by growing briskly, even as inflation remained subdued. This impressive performance of the economy reflected in large part an acceleration in productivity. After having averaged 1.4 percent per year from 1973 to 1995, output per hour in the non-farm business sector rose almost 2.8 percent per year from 1996 to 2000. The most prominent explanation for this pickup in productivity growth centers on developments in the high-tech sector--in particular, the proliferation of computers and information technology. ...
