This is a work of major significance for Semitic linguistics. It is full of brilliant insights, copious data, and (in the absence of the latter) a speculative analysis that is intuitively convincing and which reveals the author's deep understanding of Semitic historical processes and wide knowledge of general historical linguistic principles.
