Nowhere in the reams of testimony before Administrative Law Judge Morton Needelman was the basic option of selling The Detroit Free Press ever advanced by Knight-Ridder. Even Ernst & Whinney, your "accounting and consulting firm," and Arthur Andersen & Co., which was paid millions by Knight-Ridder, both have maintained that selling The Free Press to the highest bidder is not a consideration, only a JOA or a shut down. Despite that, Judge Needelman ruled objectively when he advised Ed Meese that The Free Press had cooked its books and did not qualify for a JOA under the Newspaper Preservation Act.
