Before noon on Tuesday, the lobby of the local American Red Cross on Madison's West Side was in an uproar. The wait to donate blood was at least two hours. Additional security guards were called in.

"This has never happened before," said Pam Moen, director of public relations for relief operations. "We've had hundreds and hundreds of calls."

Many blood donors showed up without calling for an appointment, since Red Cross phone lines have been tied up since shortly after the disaster. "We're fielding calls from people who want to give blood, who want to something -- anything -- they can," Moen said.
