Physicians recommend screening all pregnant women in AIDS risk groups

NEW YORK CITY -- A group of New York University Medical Center clinicians recommend that women at risk for AIDS be routinely screened for human immunodeficiency virus if they are pregnant or trying to become pregnant.

At Bellevue Hospital Center, pregnant women at risk for HIV infection are referred to the New York City Perinatal AIDS Collaborative Study. Of 25 women with admitted risk who consented to be tested from October 1986 to July 1987, only four were HIV-positive.
