A state judge Thursday invalidated a coup attempt by dissident members of a Syracuse church who are unhappy with their pastor.
Acting state Supreme Court Justice James McCarthy ruled that, under state religious corporations law, the dissident group of congregants from Bethany Baptist Church didn't properly demand from church leaders that a meeting be held June 18 for the congregation to decide whether to remove the Rev. Ronald Dewberry as pastor. Bethany Baptist is one of Syracuse's oldest African-American churches.
The group held the meeting anyway and voted to oust Dewberry and then went to court to validate ...
