NEW YORK -- The hair care category remains a bulwark of the front end for chain drug stores, and while performances of different segments have varied of late, sales in drug stores are up across the board. The gains range from 0.3% for hair color to 15.3% for styling gels and mousse in the year ended July 15, according to Information Resources Inc. (IRI).
"There's something intimate about hair care products," comments one chain drug category manager, "and women like to select them in a reasonably intimate setting.
