The most expensive material to be applied to furniture or accessories might be something called shagreen - fish skin.

It comes from a rather rare spotted dogfish, if it is truly authentic, but may be skinned from shark or ray as the epidermis are very similar and only a really trained eye can tell the difference.

It is so costly because it would take many skins to cover, say, a buffet, and the workmanship must be done by someone trained to work with these skins.
