The Marie Walsh Sharpe Foundation's Space Program, which for 10 years has provided free studios in Manhattan's Tribeca neighborhood to 14 artists each year, was on the brink of demise this past May but was saved by a last-minute gift. Its rent had doubled and director Joyce Robinson was unable to find affordable space elsewhere. Despite a fund-raising effort spearheaded by advisory committee member Chuck Close that garnered $200,000 from the Lily Auchincloss Foundation, Inc., Museum of Modern Art president Agnes Gund and her husband Daniel Shapiro, and collector David Teiger, the foundation still couldn't afford the higher rent and other program costs.
