Richard Minnich has dedicated much of his professional career to the careful study of the vegetation and fire history of Southern California and northern Baja California. He has long proposed that Baja California represents the "natural landscape" typical of the region before wide-scale manipulation by Spanish and American settlers. History and geography have combined to keep this region isolated from human activity. A concordat signed in 1772 between the viceroy of Mexico and leaders of the Franciscan and Dominican orders divided Baja California and Alta California along the line that eventually became the international border between Mexico and the United States. ...
