SANTA ANA, Calif. _ It's come to this: Safety pins are getting hard to find.
First, the cloth flags sold out, so people bought cheap cardboard flags with suction cups for their windows. Those sold out, so folks bought fabric to sew their own flags. Now fabric is selling fast, so people are emptying bins of safety pins to attach red, white and blue ribbons to their chests.
"Desert Storm was nothing _ this is 10 times the size," Terry Melancon, manager of Bannerland in Anaheim, said of Orange County's thirst for anything patriotic.
Bannerland was about the only place in the county that received a shipment of flags Tuesday _ 3,000 car-window flags ...
