Ongoing archaeological excavations at Jamestown under the dedicated direction of Dr. William Kelso and his enthusiastic helpers continue to prove that the site of Virginia's first seat of government is far more interesting a few feet below the surface that it is above ground.

The reason? Well, for one thing, Jamestown was wiped out by two disastrous fires between the time it was settled in 1607 and 92 years later when the seat of government was moved to Middle Plantation that was renamed Williamsburg for King William III at that time.
