Sep. 19--Retail sales at national chains fell 1.4 percent last week from the previous week as consumers curtailed buying to mourn and track news coverage of the terrorist attacks.
Compared with the same week last year, sales were up 2.2 percent at stores open more than one year, according to Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi in New York, which surveys national retail chains. That growth does not take into account inflation.
