Sep. 20--Northwest Airlines offered unpaid leave to many of its union workers Wednesday in hopes that many will take the time off and spare the jobs of other airline employees.
The Eagan-based carrier remains ready to reduce its work force of 53,000 by several thousand, with announcements likely today. The job cuts coincide with Northwest's 20 percent schedule reduction announced Saturday, though details of the reduced flying aren't clear. Northwest had no comment Wednesday other than saying its cuts will be revealed before the end of the week.
