A LETTER sent only three days after postage stamps were first introduced in Britain has been sold for more than pounds 25,000.
The envelope has a block of six penny black stamps in the top left hand corner and is addressed to Manchester solicitors Bagshaw and Stevenson.
It was sent by Alfred Alpen in Chester who paid six old pence (2 1 2p) to send his will and property deed in 1840. But it was the envelope that has attracted attention.
It was bought by an anonymous overseas bidder at Spink auction house in London for pounds 22,000 plus a pounds 3,300 commission.
