ONCE the gardening bug bites, a small plot is soon filled with plants. Then, in the words of the song, the only way is up.
Climbing plants can transform the walls of a house or even backyard fences as long as three golden rules are followed:
Choose suitable climbers for the situation Plant them in good soil or compost not too close to the wall Fix up supports strong enough to take the plant's weight when it has grown to maturity in a few years' time Both woody wall shrubs and twining climbers need trellis or wires against which they can be trained and tied.
