IT sounded good when Tony Blair, suitably dressed for the part in his bomber jacket, declared war on terrorism. Even if his words did make you wonder what we'd been doing in Ulster for the past 30 years.

The advantages were obvious. Our leaders didn't have to say who they were going to attack and they could avoid a whole load of difficult questions with the blanket assertion that terrorism must be wiped out.

Nobody would argue with that, even if you hadn't got much of a clue how they were going to do it.
