TIGER WOODS was the driving force behind the decision to postpone the Ryder Cup following the World Trade Centre atrocity.

American captain Curtis Strange revealed that the world No 1 has friends missing in New York after the terrorist attack 12 days ago and would have been in no state of mind to play at The Belfry next week.

Woods, who was hundreds of miles away practising in St Louis for the American Express Championship when the attack took place, was visibly stunned after being told of the news. But only now has the full extent of his pain been disclosed.
