Afghanistan's opposition forces launched new attacks in three northern provinces yesterday and took at least one district from the ruling Taliban movement.

The second day of an intensified drive against the Taliban was clearly timed to coincide with US threats to strike at Osama bin Laden, prime suspect in the devastating attacks on the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon, and those who harbour him.
