UK consumers continue to show a desire for a treat and an indulgence at mealtimes -- and they increasingly love the convenience offered by the freezer department.

The value of the frozen desserts market -- including gateaux -- enjoyed steady growth throughout the late 1990s with year-on-year increases of between 2% and 5%. By 2000 the market was estimated to be worth around 294m [pounds sterling].

Hot desserts have proved a top performer thanks to increased consumer interest in traditional puddings and the rapid, clean and simple preparation option offered by the microwave.
