HOLDING ITS LEAD in the schizophrenia market, Johnson & Johnson's Janssen Pharmaceutical Products LP has filed a new drug application with the Food & Drug Administration for a long-acting injectable formulation of Risperdal (risperidone).
Long-acting Risperdal, dosed once every two weeks, encapsulates risperidone in microspheres made of a biodegradable polymer using Alkermes Inc.'s Medisorb technology. Alkermes is the scheduled manufacturer pending regulatory approval. Risperdal, marketed in tablet and oral-solution formulations, competes with atypical antipsychotics Zyprexa (olanzapine) by Eli Lilly and Company and Geodon (ziprasidone) by Pfizer Inc.
