This is a fascinating book on a fascinating subject. Ian Hacking is a philosopher of psychiatry and historical psychiatry. Previously he has published about the subject of the 'reality' of multiple personality disorder and now has turned his attention to the diagnostic history of 'mad travellers' or sufferers of Fugue.
