FOR George Bush, pledging to fight a ''crusade'' against terrorism might have seemed like a pithy soundbite.

But that one, ill-chosen word uttered by the US President created deep offence in the Middle East where he is trying to enlist support - and it has already been exploited by Osama bin Laden in his appeal for martyrs to his cause.

"This crusade, this war on terrorism, is going to take a while," Bush told reporters in Washington. To him the word probably meant no more than a vigorous campaign.
