Living with end stage renal disease (ESRD) is a dynamic experience characterized by periods of stability, instability, and regained stability during the course of the illness trajectory. Increasing numbers of patients being are being diagnosed with ESRD, related in part to an aging population, and will continue to escalate as the 21st century unfolds (Schaubel, Morrison, Desmeules, Parsons, & Fenton, 1999).
